Service Statistics

The Latino Learning Center provided direct services to 1,762 unduplicated service recipients during calendar year 2009 as outlined below: -Provided 882 families with six hours of Homebuyer Education class instruction and a minimum of two hours of one-on-one counseling to assist them in preparing them for purchasing a home. Ninety two (92) families have completed the process of purchasing a home. -Provided vocational training to 160 students. One hundred five (105) students completed the 150- hour air conditioning repair program and fifty-five (55) students completed the 300 hour residential electricity wiring program. -Provided 60 students with ESL instruction through four levels of competency. -Operated through separate non-profit affiliate’s two (2) elderly housing communities serving 110 low-income elderly families with affordable housing that met all HUD regulatory programs and housing quality standards. -Provided 722 Spanish-speaking callers with information and referral services to appropriate social service agencies. -Partnered with City Council District I James Rodriguez to sponsor community events including an annual Family Day At the Park and Children’s Christmas Party benefiting low-income children in our community. Partnered with District 145 State Representative Carol Alvarado to provide low-income families with gifts and a Holiday Festival at the University of Houston. The LLC has focused its limited resources on providing services to low-income residents of Houston’s communities. Particular emphasis has been placed at addressing gaps in services for adult education and services to the elderly and disabled communities. All of our classes are Bilingual (English / Spanish) and are taught by experienced instructors.

Message from the CEO:

This year promises new opportunities for the Latino Learning Center to serve our community. Optimism is the New Year’s norm and everything is now possible. Our Senior Activities and Health Center is now open and serving low-income seniors and disabled adults. New partnerships have resulted in additional classes in residential electricity for unemployed low-income persons qualifying for training through the Texas Workforce Commission.

Now that the financial mortgage markets are opening up, we are seeing an uptick in the number of students enrolling in our home buyer education program which most lenders are requiring before making a loan. This is also a positive sign that things are getting better as more Houstonians are looking to invest in our communities.

This year the Latino Learning Center is planning a new and different approach to housing the elderly. We are in the process of planning and developing a multi-generation housing community where the elderly family will live on the bottom floor and the supporting family will live on the top floor. We believe this prototype housing model will add to the stability of our modern family unit where the elderly are living longer and require care and support from their children.

We are also excited about our annual gala which over the past three (3) years has resulted in great success. From early indications, this year promises to be the best gala we have staged to date and we are looking forward to participation from all segments of our community.
